ADA Requirements for Fixed Route Service
-One Day Course-
The course provides participants with a basic understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how that federal civil rights law provides regulatory criteria and requirements for the provision of service to passengers with disabilities on fixed route bus service. This course details the latest regulatory requirements for the provision of fixed route bus service for people with disabilities especially passengers in mobility devices. The course assists agencies in developing effective ADA policies that remove barriers to accessibility.Objectives:
- Understand the purpose of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a major civil rights law
- Review Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations implementing the ADA
- Understand ADA nondiscrimination provisions
- Review DOT final rule changes to 49 CFR Part 37 regarding the definition of a wheelchair and reasonable modifications to policies, practices, procedures for greater accessibility
- Understand ADA requirements for the provision of service on fixed route buses
- Review the trend in FTA Compliance Review Findings on fixed route service
- Review “street scenarios” that constitute barriers to accessibility
- Understand the importance of documented ADA policies in the provision of service to people with disabilities
