Effective Transit Board Management, Membership and Community Advocacy
-Half Day Course-
This course is for incumbent transit board members or those who are new to a transit board on becoming an effective transit board member. The training covers the roles and responsibilities of transit board members, board structures, effective meeting management, defining community needs and measuring board effectiveness through self assessment. The transit board role of capturing political and public will is also emphasized.Objectives:
- Review the four primary roles of transit board members
- Provide guidance on five key responsibilities of board members in the context of public transit
- Understand the importance of establishing committee structures on transit boards
- Know the importance of effective meeting management
- Review role expectations of the board chair and board members
- Learn to define community needs and deliver transit services to meet those needs
- Know how to meet the societal changes of your community in terms of transit service
- Learn how to market the transit system to the public
- Be an effective transit system educator of elected officials
- Learn the tools of “political leverage”
- Understand best practices for measuring transit board effectiveness through self assessment
