Bus Stop Accessibility Guidelines and Management
-One Day Course-
This course presents a step by step approach to effective management and upgrades of accessible bus stops. Using guidance in Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, ADA Accessibility Guidelines, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Circular, Americans with Disabilities Act Guidance, along with Easter Seals Project Action and TCRP reports, guidance is provided on evaluating a transit entity’s current bus stop accessibility. This includes evaluations of accessible pathways to the bus stop, bus stop amenities and signage and bus stop area space for passengers with disabilities. The course includes “how to” recommendations for creating a bus stop inventory, bus stop improvement plan and a priority system for bus stop upgrades. Pictures and examples of bus stop accessibility are used from transit entities around the country.Objectives:
- Know the available tools for effective bus stop management such as DOT regulatory guidance, the ADA Accessible Guidelines, the FTA Circular on ADA Guidance, Easter Seals Project Action and TCRP reports
- Know how to evaluate the current state of your community bus stop accessibility
- Understand the importance of accessible pathways
- Develop an ability to determine appropriate maneuvering space for passengers in wheelchairs at each stop
- Develop assessment skills to determine appropriate bus stop amenities and signage
- Understand how to develop an effective bus stop improvement plan which includes a bus stop inventory and a system for prioritizing bus stop upgrades.
